SafariSafari 3.1 was released today, and I (along with many others) have noticed problems with GMail.  When typing a message, if you press either the “Shift” key or the “Command” key on the Mac, focus jumps to the subject or the addresses of the message.  I haven’t confirmed this behavior on Windows yet, however it’s very annoying!

Hopefully Apple will resolve this shortly, however it does beg the question, “Does anyone at Apple use Gmail?”

This question is being asked by users the Apple support forum.  C’mon Apple, release a patch?!

Update 24th March 2008: Okay, after hearing from lots of people about this problem, it appears you can resolve the issue by changing your language to English (US) and the problems go away.  I’m not sure why this is, but at least I can use Gmail in Safari again!

Change your language by doing the following:

  1. Login in to GMail
  2. Click  Settings in the top right-hand corner of the page
  3. The first setting displayed is Language - change this to English (US)
  4. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page

Update 27th March 2008: My Gmail has now been updated to the latest version (I believe this is being done progressively by Google) which also resolves the problem without having to change your language settings.  So hopefully everyone will have this problem solved soon as Google upgrades Gmail.
